The concept for the Etchmiadzin Agricultural Center was inspired by the Holy Translators. The Feast of the Holy Translators is a holy day in the Armenian Apostolic Church, which is dedicated to a group of saints and literary figures who created the Armenian alphabet, translated the Bible and started a movement of translating important documents into Armenian. Even though closely connected to religion, we wanted to integrate the concepts of education, knowledge and science into the building.
We set out to fortify the argument that one can transform many things with education and knowledge. We also wanted to represent the idea that knowledge is one of the core elements of faith. Etchmiadzin Agricultural Center provides an educational environment intended to develop agricultural skills in youth at a more in depth level. The facade of the building incorporates the importance of the Armenian alphabet by having the letters engraved in a manner that allows light to pass through them. Light penetrates through the holes during the day and exits out of the holes at night time when the interior is lit up. This symbolizes the process of giving and taking or in other words, teaching and learning.
