VEON Armenia’s original headquarters is one of those buildings that stood out during soviet times. It’s modern exterior gave it a contemporary and artistic appearance among other standardized buildings. The history of the building and its design firmly fortify it as a statement of creativity during Soviet times. Though exceptionally unique, the building was outdated when we first started working on it. The project is separated in to the reception area and the office spaces.
For the design of the reception area we asked ourselves, “what is the point of telecommunication or communication in general?” After researching different answers from experts in this topic we concluded that communication starts when you have the openness to leave your inner circle and comfort space to observe and reach out to the public. It’s basically an urge to get out and become a part of the public space. We symbolized this by leaving your own space and going out to the street and thus we set to create a street-like feeling for the interior of the reception. For the design concept we brought the outside inside by adding elements of the streets to the interior. For example, we added communal areas for gatherings usually found in building courtyards, plants, streets, and other elements. We restored and incorporated many details from the old building that were outdated.
